RHP - Dave Stewart, 33, leaves for Toronto as FA in '93  callibre was an extreme rarity. Four was unreal. A-Rod and Jeter ended up
(he had had a couple of subpar years before leaving)   being in the all time top 100, Tejada garnered well over a hundred career

1990 - The A's, heavy favorites to win, get swept in the World Series by a   star of the big six (Giambi, Tejada, Hudson, Zito, Mulder, Chavez) that the
vastly inferior (talentwise) Reds team.  A's choose to keep long term during the next decade and he immediately
becomes totally injury prone for the remainder of his career once he signs.
1990 - Bob Welch wins 27 games and the Cy Young
1996 - The Coliseum is ruined for baseball when it is renovated for the
1990 - Ricky Henderson wins the AL MVP. Ricky has a .439 On Base Raiders return to Oakland as thousands of seats are added in the outfield
Percentage, steals 65 bases and hits 28 homers while batting .325.  to make Al Davis more money. The park loses its charm for baseball.
He was a force of nature as a leadoff man. You couldn't pitch to him and . It does become a better hitters park and McGwire hits 52 dingers.
you couldn't pitch around him. Pick your poison when he comes to the plate.
1996 - The A's are sold to Steve Schott, a relative of the Reds' Marge.
1991 - Ricky Henderson sets the all time stolen base mark at 939 The heady days of Walter Haas' relatively deep pockets are over.
Ricky continued stealing and ended up with 1406 when it was all over. It's time for Sandy Alderson and Billy Beane to get really creative.
      Enter moneyball.
1992 - Dennis Eckersley wins the Cy Young and MVP saving 51 games
The A's win the Division, but lose in the playoffs to Toronto  1997 - Mark McGwire hits over 50 again, his free agent walk year. The total
It marks Eckersley's final season as an elite closer. is split between the A's and the Cards as McGwire is traded to St. Louis at
mid season for three non entities
1992 - Oakland trades Canseco to the Rangers for Ruben Sierra.
This was a trade of two prolific talents whose talents were nevertheless 1997 - Future ace righthander Tim Hudson is drafted in the 6th round
still somehow dwarfed by the size of their egos.
The egos proving their undoing as players in both cases.  1998 - Future ace lefthander Mark Mulder is drafted in the first round,
    second pick overall
1992 - First Baseman Jason Giambi is drafted in the second round
He will be the main man in the A's lineup in their re-emeergence 1999 - Future ace lefthander Barry Zito is drafted in the first round,
as a power early in the next decade ninth pick overall

1993 - Owner Walter Haas Jr decides to cash out. Once again, a great A's
team is dismantled prematurely after a run of titles. Haas dies in 1994.

1993 - Oakland drops 28 games in the standings to 68-94.
  The mini-dynasty is over.
There's a mass exodus out the door for a variety of reasons as Walt Weiss,
Rickey Henderson, Carney Lansford, Jose Canseco, Dave Stewart and
Mike Moore all leave. Mark McGwire is hurt and Dennis Eckersley and
Bob Welch both lose their effectiveness.
The cupboard is left pretty bare as there are no replacements.
