  2000 - The A's enter the decade with a big four in tow (superstar infielders Jason    
   Giambi, 29, Miguel Tejada, 26, and Eric Chavez, 22) and ace righthander Tim  Outfield:  
  Hudson, 24. To that group they add two twenty two year old aces in rookie Nick Swisher (9.16) -   26  
  lefthanders Mark Mulder and Barry Zito. Armed with this core group of six young Mark Kotsay (7.49) -   24  
  stars, the A's make the playoffs the first four years of the decade, but fail to get  Jack Cust (6.97) -   22

  to the powerhouse Seattle club. Damon leaves for Boston as a FA at the end of  Notable Events:

     2007 - Barry Zito leaves as a free agent for the Giants.  
  2002 - The inevitable exodus of big stars starts as Jason Giambi    
   bolts to the Yankees as a free agent. As it turns out, Jason had only 2007 - Eric Chavez, the one superstar that the A's kept, begins a   
  one more big season left in him before the reverse effects of his 'roids  depressing string of injury filled seasons, as luck would have it.

   all amongst the worst offenders. Despite the loss, Oakland doesn't miss a   2007 - With the last two of the core six either gone or hobbled, the A's

    2008 - In a horrific trade, Billy Beane deals 22 year old OF Carlos Gonzalez  
  2004 - Miguel Tejada is the next major defection, leaving for Baltimore and closer Huston Street to the Rockies for Matt Holliday  
   as a free agent. This one hurts as the A's fail to make the playoffs, Unclear what Beene was thinking on this one.  
  finishing a game behind Anaheim for a playoff spot.    
    2008 - In a terrific trade, Billy Beane deals pitcher Rich Harden to the Cubs   
  2005 - In anticipation of losing them to free agency, the A's trade pitchers for Third Baseman Josh Donaldson. Makes up a bit for the Holliday trade.  
  Mark Mulder to the Cards and Tim Hudson to the Braves. They don't    
   get nearly the value in return, but the players they do get are a couple    
  notches above warm bodies. The acquisitions help keep the A's heads     
  above water for the next two seasons and they actually make it back to    
   the playoffs in 2006, losing in the second round this time
