  Notable Events:
  Third Base:
2000 - The A's enter the decade with a big four in tow (superstar infielders Jason Eric Chavez (32.84) -   72
Giambi, 29, Miguel Tejada, 26, and Eric Chavez, 22) and ace righthander Tim
Hudson, 24. To that group they add two twenty two year old aces in rookie Outfield:
lefthanders Mark Mulder and Barry Zito. Armed with this core group of six young Nick Swisher (9.16) -   26
stars, the A's make the playoffs the first four years of the decade, but fail to get  Mark Kotsay (7.49) -   24
out of the first round of the playoffs each time - with the talent they had,  Jack Cust (6.97) -   22
the A's definitely were post season underachievers. Oakland continues to be very Terrence Long (4.6) -   22
competitive the following three seasons( 2004-2006)  with another playoff  Eric Byrnes (6.69) -   18
appearance where Ironically, in 2006, they overachieve by advancing to the ALCS. Rajai Davis (4.77) -  16
    Jermaine Dye (2.84) -   13
2001 - Twenty seven year old outfielders Johnny Damon and Jermaine Dye are Ryan Sweeney (5.02) -   12
picked up from the Royals in two separate deals. They beef up the offense  Johnny Damon (2.42) -   9
assisting in an eleven game rise in the standings altho' the A's only finish second Matt Holliday (2.96) -   7
to the powerhouse Seattle club. Damon leaves for Boston as a FA at the end of
  the season.  Notable Events:

2002 - The inevitable exodus of big stars starts as Jason Giambi  2007 - Barry Zito leaves as a free agent for the Giants.
bolts to the Yankees as a free agent. As it turns out, Jason had only
one more big season left in him before the reverse effects of his 'roids  2007 - Eric Chavez, the one superstar that the A's kept, begins a
use kicked in. The A's were 'roids central with McGwire, Canseco and Giambi depressing string of injury filled seasons, as luck would have it.
all amongst the worst offenders. Despite the loss, Oakland doesn't miss a
beat as they improve to 102 wins despite scoring 84 less runs than in 2001. 2007 - With the last two of the core six either gone or hobbled, the A's
The season included a record setting 21 game winning streak by the A's. plummet in the standings and stay down there.

2004 - Miguel Tejada is the next major defection, leaving for Baltimore 2008 - In a horrific trade, Billy Beane deals 22 year old OF Carlos Gonzalez
as a free agent. This one hurts as the A's fail to make the playoffs, and closer Huston Street to the Rockies for Matt Holliday
finishing a game behind Anaheim for a playoff spot. Unclear what Beene was thinking on this one.

2005 - In anticipation of losing them to free agency, the A's trade pitchers 2008 - In a terrific trade, Billy Beane deals pitcher Rich Harden to the Cubs
Mark Mulder to the Cards and Tim Hudson to the Braves. They don't for Third Baseman Josh Donaldson. Makes up a bit for the Holliday trade.
get nearly the value in return, but the players they do get are a couple
notches above warm bodies. The acquisitions help keep the A's heads
above water for the next two seasons and they actually make it back to
the playoffs in 2006, losing in the second round this time
