  Outfield:
2000 - An ugly decade for Baltimore. This is a throwback to the old Browns Jeff Conine (5.46) -   26
days. Their best seasons in the Oughts were 74-88 both in 2000 and 2005. Nick Markakis (16.96) -   26
Hard to pinpoint exactly what's wrong with this franchise. Owner Angelos's Jay Gibbons (6.14) -   20
inconsistency is definitely a problem. One year he spends, one year he Luis Matos (4.44) -   20
doesn't. A lot of shuffling of General Managers and Managers, as well.  Corey Patterson (5.92) -   16
It wasn't the money or the fan support. The O's were pulling in two and a Adam Jones (4.64) -   15
half million a year in attendence even with bad teams. The GM's,  BJ Surhoff (4.56) -   12
particularly Thrift, Beattie and MacPhail were high quality. Definitely a
puzzler. One problem was that the Yankees and Red Sox were in the  Notable Events:
Division. That may have caused an impatient go for the big score kind of
mentality shortcircuiting a stable long term approach to winning. 2002 - Cal Ripken retires at age forty one

2000 - The Orioles acquire third baseman Melvin Mora from the Mets  2002 - Rodrigo Lopez is signed as a free agent at age twenty six. He

Baltimore as Bordick became a free agent at the end of the year and mainstay of the starting rotation thru the middle of the decade
  re-signed back with the Orioles.
2004 - Miguel Tejada signs as a free agent. It was one of Peter
2001 - Albert Belle, a huge free agent signing in 1998, retires due Angelos's up days in a roller coaster ride ownership run of one

against a premature end to Belle's career so owner Peter Angelos
saved himself a bundle of cash. Belle was flat out nuts (as was 2006 - Nick Markakis debuts as a 22 year old rookie. He has four
Angelos for signing him to a huge deal) and his presence was toxic in  big years and looks like he may have a possible Hall of Fame career,
Baltimore's clubhouse. The retirement was win-win for everybody but after signing a big contract in 2009 and injuring the hamate bone
except the insurance company.  in his wrist, he settles into being merely a very good ball player
Nick had been a first round pick in the 2003 draft
2001 - Mike Mussina, a hall of fame quality talent, jumps ship and
signs with the Yankees. The Orioles do not recover from his  2008 - the Orioles deal ace Eric Bedard to Seattle for young outfielder
departure.  Adam Jones. The deal would have been a steal for Baltimore even
if Bedard hadn't blown out his arm right away. Bedard had been a
2001 - Brian Roberts comes up as a rookie. A rare bright light in a  bargain 6th round pick in the 1999 draft. This trade was definitely
dark Oriole decade. Roberts was a first round pick in the 1999 draft.  one of  GM Andy Macphail's best moves.
A big part of the O's problems in the Oughts is the poor drafting of first
round picks since the Mussina selection in 1990. Roberts was an 2009 - Brilliant catching prospect Matt Wieters debuts at age 23.
