    Notable Events:
1970 - An odd decade. Boston finishes well above .500 the entire
decade with their worst mark 83-79 and best mark 99-64. However, 1975 - Fred Lynn becomes the first (and only) player to win both

for second baseman Doug Griffin and pitcher Ken Tatum  Rice becomes one of many black Red Sox stars in the latter half of
the twentieth century unhappy about their treatment by Red Sox fans.
1971 - Boston signs Luis Tiant, 30 as a free agent. He had been released Lynn had been a second round pick in the '73 draft.  Rice was a first
by the Braves. Luis had lost twenty two seasons earlier with the Twins round pick in the '71 draft.
and had a 1-7 mark with Boston in '71. Kudos to Sox brass for sticking
with Tiant because from '72 - '78, El Tiante rewards them with a 121-74 mark 1976 - Charlie Finley sells Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers to the
Sox only to have the deal nullified by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn.
1972 - OF Dwight Evans, 20, is a rookie. He was a 5th round pick  Kuhn allowed his personal feud with Finley to color his judgement.
in the '69 draft Finley never failed, and correctly so, to point out how slow to the mark
Kuhn was. This, of course, riled Kuhn who showed that he was
1972 - The Sox finish half a game behind Detroit in a strike  unable to rise above personal pettiness in his responsibilites. This was

1975 - The Sox win the AL title, but lose to the Reds in the World

1978  - The Sox blow a fourteen and half game lead in August
to the Yankees. The Yanks blow ahead of them only for the Sox
