  1980 - The Red Sox ended the Seventies as a well above average team. Mike Easler (4.16) -    9  
  Boston has a solid core of position players in the prime of their careers in    
   Fisk, Burleson, Evans, Lynn and Rice. However, the pitching begins to go Notable Events:  
    south quickly in the Eighties, making Boston only a slightly  above .500  
   team for the first half of the decade despite the good hitters. 1986 - Roger Clemens emerges as a star, going 24-4, leading  
    Boston to the Division title. Clemens, however, has a poor ALCS,  
  1980 - Catcher Rich Gedman, 20, is a rookie. He was signed out of high  but the Red Sox overcome his foibles to win the pennant anyway.

  1980 - Rick Burleson is traded to the Angels for Carney Lansford The Sox overcome his failings to take the lead in the game only to have

  1981 - Fred Lynn is traded to the Angels for Joe Rudi the Series. After all of their post season heartbreaks, Red Sox fans  
    are beginning to wonder whether they're better off not getting to the   
  1981 - Carlton Fisk signs with the White Sox as a Free Agent post season at all. Despite the one bad play, Buckner had a great year  
    and Boston would not have been near the World Series without him.  
  1982 - Wade Boggs, 24, bats .349 as a rookie. Boggs had been a  Buckner merited Boston fans's forgiveness.

    aging veterans who were key members of the 1986 champs -  
  1983 - Carl Yazstremski retires after twenty three seasons Don Baylor, Bill Buckner and Tony Armas.  1987 is a down year, but  
     the infusion of youth sets the Sox up for their 1988 division title run   
  1983 - Twenty five year old ace lefty Bruce Hurst emerges as a starter  
  Bruce was a first round pick in the '76 draft. 1988 - Boston picks up righty Mike Boddicker, 31, at the trade deadline  
    to help them in their push for the Division title. It works as Boddicker goes  
  1984 - Dennis Eckersley is traded to the Cubs for Bill Buckner 7-3 2.63 down the stretch. However, the deal costs them two young studs  
    righty Curt Schilling, 22, and OF Brady Anderson, 24.  
  1984 - Righty Roger Clemens, 21, goes 9-4 as a rookie. Roger was a first   Schilling was a second round pick in the '86 draft.

    superior A's in the ALCS
