  1980 - Whitey Herzog is hired on as manager and general manager. Milt Thompson (4.27) -   12  
  A big factor in Herzog's success and Devine's lack of success in his     
  second Cardinal tenure was the ballpark. The new Busch Stadium Notable Events:  
  could only be played for speed. Herzog understood this while Devine    
  apparently didn't.  1985 - OF Vince Coleman, 23, is Rookie of the Year. All Coleman does  
     is steal 110 bases as a rookie. He follows that up with two more 100  
  1981 - The Cards get robbed. They finish with the best  overall  plus stolen base seasons in years two and three. Vince was a tenth  
  record in the NL, but win nothing because they ended up a  round pick in the 1981 draft.

   played less games than the winners 1985 - LHP John Tudor, 31, is picked up from the Pirates for George  
    Hendrick  Tudor ends up going 21-8 with a 1.93 for the  
  1981 - St. Louis obtains ace Joaquin Andujar, 28, from the Astros pennant winning Cards but doesn't win the Cy Young  
  in a lopsided deal for Tony Scott    
  1985 - Slugging 1B Jack Clark. 29, is obtained from the Giants   
  1981 - Bruce Sutter, 28, is obtained from the Cubs for Leon Durham for four players.  
  Quality for quality in this one    
  1985 - The Cards are NL champs winning 101 games before losing  
  1982 - Herzog steps down as GM. However, prior to stepping down,  to the Royals in the World Series. They're fueled by good pitching  
  he obtains Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith, 27,  from San Diego  (Tudor, Andujar and Cox combine for sixty wins), excellent fielding,  
  for shortstop Gary Templeton; outfielder Lonnie Smith, 26, who would and lots of speed (five guys with over thirty stolen bases)  
   steal 68 bases,  from the Phillies for a couple of mediocre pitchers;      
  and future MVP outfielder Willie McGee, 23, from the Yankees for  1987 - The Cards win the pennant despite having no pitcher win more than   
  journeyman pitcher Bob Sykes. Whitey made a pretty good GM. eleven games. Their top eight pitchers all won between  8 and 11 games  for a  
  Herzog stays on as manager in an unusual move, but now he has  total of 77. 1B Jack Clark had a huge year spearheading an offense otherwise  
  gotten the speed guys as GM to make manager Herzog happy led by speedsters Smith, Pendleton, Coleman and McGee. It's their third pennant  
     in a six year span and they really should have had four in seven. A mini dynasty!  
  1982 - Six Cards hit double figures in steals, totalling 182 stolen  
  bases between them as St. Louis runs to a World Series Title. 1988 - The Cards drop nineteen games in the standings as they  
    can't overcome having a staff consisting of mediocre pitchers.  
  1984 3B Terry Pendleton, 23, is a rookie. He was a seventh round     
  pick in the 1982 draft 1989 - Righthander Bob Tewksbury, 28,  is signed as a   
    bargain free agent. He had been a Yankee farmhand  
       
    1989 - August Busch dies. Anheuser-Busch takes control of the club
