  1990 - Not a decade to remember, particularly by Cardinal standards. It was a    
  mediocre squad heading into the decade. There were still the four speedsters  Notable Events:  
  who had led them to the '87 pennant, pretty much still in their primes, leading the    
  offense. However, their act had lost it's edge. Coleman, Pendleton, McGee and 1996 - The Jockety / LaRussa combo pays immediate   
  Smith (a young 35) were playing at a notch below where they were a few years dividends as the Cardinals gain twenty six games in the   
  earlier. Meanwhile, other than Bob Tewksbury and Lee Smith, there wasn't standings to win the National League pennant. Actually, 1996   
  much happening on the mound. was one of those one year aberrations that  occurs from time   
    to time. It all came together for the 1996 Cards as they  
  1990 - Whitey Herzog resigns as manager  dropped back down fifteen games in the standings in 1997.  
    The big contributors to the 1996 championship club:   
  1990 - Joe Torre, before he became a genius, is hired as manager Holdovers:

  1990 - Twenty three year old centerfielder Ray Lankford is a rookie. He □ Righthander Donovan Osborne, 27, went from 4 wins to 13 wins  
  was a third round pick in the 1987 draft. Lankford goes on to be one of □ Righthander Mark Petkovsek, 30, went from 6 wins to 11 wins  
  the better players in the game for the Cards for over a decade  Newcomers:  
  combining above average speed, power and fielding with good hitting.  □ Outfielder Ron Gant, 31, free agent signing from the Reds  
  □ Third baseman Gary Gaetti - free agent pickup at age 37 from KC  
  1993 - Mark Whiten hits four homers in a game. He also knocks □ Shortstop Royce Clayton, 26, picked up from Giants in a trade  
  in twelve runs in the game, tieing ex-Cardinal Jim Bottomley's mark □ Closer  Dennis Eckersley, 41, trade from Oakland   
    □ Righthander Todd Stottlemyre, 28, won 14 - trade from Oakland,    
  1993- RHP Alan Benes, 21, is the 16th overall pick in the amateur draft □ Righthander Andy Benes, 28, 18 game winner - free agent pickup  
     from Seattle.   
  1994 - The NL realigns with the Cards moved into the Central Division    
    1997 - Ozzie Smith retires  
  1994 - The season is cut off by the baseball strike.    
    1997 - Mark McGwire is obtained from the A's. He finishes the  
  1994 - In a briliant move, the Anhueser Busch corporation hires Walt  seaon with a combined total of 58 home runs.  
  Jockety as GM. He is retained as GM after William O. DeWitt Jr,. the     
  son of former big league owner and GM William O.DeWitt, buys the  1998 - McGwire hits 70 homers in a neck and neck race with  
  club the following year.  Sammy Sosa, who hits 66.   
     Their explots singlehandedly revived fan interest in baseball.   
  1995 - Righthander Matt Morris, 20, is drafted in the first round (12th overall)  
    1999 - Twenty Two year old shortstop Edgar Renteria is obtained   
  1996 - After Cards reliever Tom Henke wins the Rolaids Relief pticher from Florida for reliever Braden Looper and two others  
  of the year award in 1995, he abruptly retires. This one hurts.    
  It wasn't an injury, he just was ready to move on in his life. 1999 - McGwire hits 65 homers  
       
  1996 - Walt Jockety hires Tony LaRussa as his manager. A match  1999 - Fernando Tatis hits two grand slams in the same inning  
  made in baseball heaven. Joe Torre, who is fired to make way for    
  LaRussa, is hired by the Yankees. Win - win.
