  1940 - Upon the death of J Louis Comiskey, ownership of the White ShortStop:  
  Sox goes to his widow, Grace. This is a disaster for White Sox fans Luke Appling (40.76) -      97  
  as Grace is pretty clueless about running the club. She retains     
  ownership until her death sixteen years hence. The team J Louis was Third Base:  
  trying to put together holds up for a couple of years, but, by 1942, Chicago Floyd Baker (6.22) -      10  
  was headed back for the league cellar. Luckily for the Sox, teams like    
  the A's, Browns and Senators made hitting total rock bottom difficult. Outfield:

  1940 - The only star player of the decade for Chicago is Luke Appling. Wally Moses (11.64) -      39

  1944 - Lefty Ed Lopat, 26, is brought up from Little Rock. He had been a  Oris Hockett (1.53) -      10  
  pitcher in the White Sox minor league chain since 1939. Ed was 4F and

  1946 - Jimmy Dykes resigns as Sox manager after twelve years. 1949 - In the first of Frank Lane's major thefts, he picks up twenty two year  
  His tenure is a franchise record. old lefty Billy Pierce from Detroit for journeyman catcher Aaron Robinson.  
    Pierce goes on to be the ace of the Sox staff throughout the Fifties  
  1948 - Frank Lane is hired as General Manager. He turns the club Ironically, before Lane arrived, the Sox had sent ace lefty Eddie Lopat to  
   around via his trades in the early Fifties.  the Yankees in a deal for the same Aaron Robinson. Overall, it ended up  
    as a wash, Lopat for Pierce altho' Pierce was a lot younger  
   1949 - Frank Lane purchases slick fielding shortstop Alfonso     
  Carrasquel from Brooklyn where he was blocked by Pee Wee Reese
