  Cy Young: 1964 - In one of a number of tragedies involving ballplayers trying  
  None to pilot their own planes, second baseman Ken Hubbs crashes  
     his plane into the side of a mountain.  
  Notable Events:    
    1964 - Shortstop Don Kessinger is signed as an amateur free agent.  
  1960 - The Cubs enter the decade in doormat status. However, the club He is 21. Kessinger had been an All American basketball player at

  The 1960 roster includes:    
    Ernie Banks, 29, shortstop 1965 - Nineteen year old lefthander Ken Holtzman is drafted  
    Ron Santo, 20, third base in the fourth round of the Amateur draft. He works his way up to   
    Tony Taylor, 24, second base the Cubs by the end of the season. After several good years with   
    Billy Williams, 22, outfield Chicago, he's dealt to the A's in 1971 in a quality for quality deal  
    Dick Ellsworth, 20, pitcher with centerfielder Rick Monday coming to Chicago  
    Glenn Hobbie, 24, pitcher    
    Don Cardwell, 24, pitcher 1966 - In a great trade for the Cubs, they acquire Hall of Fame  
    Jim Brewer, 22, pitcher righthander Ferguson Jenkins, 23, and fleet centerfielder Adolfo  
    Moe Drabowsky, 24, pitcher Phillips, 24, for a couple of old pitchers who are at the end of their  
    road. Altho' it takes a year, this is the deal that gets the Cubs over  
  1960 - One that got away. Lefty reliever Jim Brewer comes up as a  the hump from perennial doormat to contenders  
  twenty two year old rookie. After three years with Chicago, he will be  
  dealt to the Dodgers where he embarks on a lengthy career as one of  1966 -Upon his hiring as Cubs manager, Leo Durocher declares   
  the top relievers in the game. The Cubs get nothing for him. "The Cubs are not an eigth place team" and he is proven correct   
    as they finish tenth.   
  1960 - Another one that got away. Outfielder Lou Brock is signed as    
  an amateur free agent at the age of twenty one. He comes up to the 1967 - Durocher turns it around as the Cubs improve twenty   
  big club the following season. He's traded to the Cards for pitcher  eight games in the standings and go from tenth to third  
  Ernie Broglio in 1964. A couple of things about the deal. The Cubs     
  never realize what they've got in Brock as they don't unleash him as  1967 - The improvement in the standings comes from their pitching  
  the Cardinals will do. Brock was made for the spacious Busch Stadium as the starting lineup is a very good one and is almost no different  
   and the small ball that the Cards needed to play to be successful there. from 1966. The position players of 1B-Banks, 2B-Beckert,  
  The other is how could the Cubs not see that Broglio was washed up? SS-Kessinger, 3B-Santo, OF-Williams, OF- Phillips, C-Hundley  
    is excellent and serves the Cubs well thru the end of the decade.

  1962 - Glenn Beckert, 21, second baseman is taken from Boston in the were solid in the rotation: Joe Niekro 10-7  and Rich Nye 13-10  
  Rule 5 draft. He comes up to the Cubs in 1965    
    1969 - The Cubs lead the Mets all summer, but collapse in   
    September, going from a 2 1/2 game lead on September 9th  
    to lose the division by eight games. A major disappointment for a  
    very talented Cubs team.
