1970 - The Cubs begin the Seventies on a low. They have an excellent Bobby Murcer (0.93) -   17
club but they blew a big lead and lost the1969 pennant to the Mets.
That's as close as this group will get to winning anything. For the first Notable Events:

they still have the nucleus from their pennant run. However, by mid 1975 - Righthander Lee Smith, 17, is drafted by the Cubs in the
decade, they descend into mediocrity and worse. They haven't signed second round of the amateur draft. Lee comes up to the Cubs in
any star quality players for over a decade when they signed Banks 1980 and develops into one of the top relievers in baseball

leagues - in most of them he is rated as one of the top relievers
1970 - Righthander Rick Reuschel, 21, is drafted in the third round of the in the game
amateur draft. He comes up to the big leagues in 1972 and is the ace

their best run since 1939. Leo Durocher, who presided over the using a devastating cutter, becomes one of top relievers in the
streak, is rewarded by being fired as manager game during his five year stint with the Cubs

1972 - Outfielder Jose Cardenal, 28, is obtained in a deal with 1976 - Bill Madlock wins the batting title.
