   Brandon Inge, twenty four year old third baseman,  joins the Juan Encarnacion (1.55) -    9

   rather quickly seeing how bad the Tigers were for so long.  
  2004 - In a move that most folks found extremely questionable,  The nucleus of catcher Ivan Rodriguez, second baseman Placido Polanco,   
  all star catcher Ivan Rodriguez signs on with the Tigers as a free agent. shortstop Carlos Guillen, outfielders Magglio Ordonez and Curtis Granderson  
  . With Detroit being so awful for so long,  the conventional wisdom  and pitchers Justin Verlander and Jeremy Bonderman is young and talented  
   was that Rodriguez would be miserable in Tigerland.  Detroit also gets some unexpectedly strong years out of  outfielders Greg   
  Give credit to GM Dave Dombrowski and owner Mike Ilitch for convincing Monroe and Marcus Thames and pitchers Kenny Rodgers and Todd Jones.  
   I-Rod to take the plunge.  Signing Pudge was a major step in turning  
   the club around as he gave the Tigers some cachet they otherwise didn't have.  2006 - Detroit is on a roll. Not only do they gain twenty four games in the  
     standings to make the Wild Card, but they beat the  Yankees in the ALDS  
  2004 - Hard hitting, speedy centerfielder Curtis Granderson, 23, is a rookie.  and the A's iin the ALCS before dropping the World Series to the Cards.  
   He was selected in the third round of the 2002 draft.  
     2007 - The Tigers come back down to earth a bit, but the nucleus of a  
  2004 - Good hitting shortstop Carlos Guillen, 28, is pilfered from Seattle in a trade..  strong club remains in place.  
       
  2005 - Justin Verlander, a twenty two year old flame throwing righthander is a rookie 2008 - In a salary dump, the Marlins make a huge trade with Detroit dealing  
  He was the second overall pick in the 2004 amateur draft.   mega super star Miguel Cabrera, 25, to the Tigers. The Tigers send back   
   a bunch of prospects led by outfielder Cameron  Maybin but this goes   
  2005 - Magglio Ordonez, 31, a sluggng outfielder, is signed as a free  down as the best trade in Detroit history.

    2009 - Twenty year old righthander Rick Porcello joins the club and   
  2005 - Excellent second baseman Placido Polanco, 29, is obtained from the  immediately goes 14-9. He was a 2007 first round pick. The expectations  
   Phillies in exchange for closer Ugueth Urbina.   are huge for Porcello. He doesn't become the next Verlander,  
    but he turns into a solid big league starter  
  2006 - Detroit isn't kidding around. They sign on Jim Leyland as manager.     
    All Leyland knows how to do is win.
