  Notable Events: Willie Mays (102.24) -   207
    Orlando Cepeda (30.42) -   76
1958 - The Giants move to San Francisco. They are a very entertaining  Felipe Alou (17.21) -   32
club thru their first dozen seasons. They are also reasonably successful Bobby Bonds (9.06) -   26
averaging eighty nine wins, but only win one pennant. GM Chub Feeney was  Willie Kirkland (7.01) -   20
expert at signing young hard hitting outfielders. Not so good anywhere else.  Harvey Kuenn (3.32) -   15
Adding outfielders to a squad that already had a young Willie Mays was Jesus Alou (0.02) -   15
probably not what you wanted to prioritize. Anyway, they signed Willie Jackie Brandt (1.66) -  12
Kirkland, Willie McCovey, Leon Wagner, Orlando Cepeda, Bill White, Matty Alou (0.82) -   7
Felipe Alou, Jesus Alou, Matty Alou, Jim Ray Hart, Manny Mota, Leon Wagner (2.87) -  3
Ken Henderson, Jose Cardenal, Bobby Bonds, George Foster,
Gary Matthews and Gary Maddox.   San Francisco spent much of the Notable Events:
decade trading these guys to try to fill in gaps in other positions, particularly
pitching. They never could quite get over the hump. The 1958 Giants roster   1962 - The Giants lose a tight seven game World Series to the
contained a number of players  who would help them moving forward: Yankees ending on a screaming liner by Willie McCovey right at
Centerfielder Willie Mays, 27, arguably the best player of all time Yankee second baseman Bobby Richardson off of Yankee ace
First Base Bill White, 24, signed as a free agent in 1953  Ralph Terry with Mays on third.
Outfield Willie Kirkland, 24, signed as a free agent in 1953
Pitcher Johnny Antonelli, 28, picked up in a deal with the Braves in 1954 1963 - Hall of Fame righthander Gaylord Perry, 23, is a rookie. He was
Outfield Leon Wagner, signed as a free agent in 1954 signed in 1958
First Base Orlando Cepeda, 20, signed as a free agent in 1955
Third Base Jim Davenport, 24, signed as a free agent in 1955 1963 - Outfielder Jesus Alou, 21, is a rookie He was signed in 1958
Outfield Felipe Alou, 23, signed as a free agent in 1955
Pitcher Mike McCormick, 19, signed as a free agent in 1956 1963 - 3B Jim Ray Hart, 21, is a rookie. He was signed in 1960
Outfield Jackie Brandt, 24, obtained from Cards in 9 player deal in 1956
Pitcher Stu Miller, 30, obtained from Phillies for Jim Hearn in 1957 1963 - Outfielder Jose Cardenal, 19, is a rookie. He was signed in 1960
He's dealt to the Angels for journeyman catcher Jack Hiatt in '64
1959 - Righthander Jack Sanford, 30, is obtained from the Phillies
for Ruben Gomez in a steal 1963 - Righty reliever Frank Linzy, 22, is a rookie. He was signed in 1960

1959 - No need to keep Bill White around when you've got Orlando Cepeda. 1963 - Giants field an all-brother outfield of Felipe, Matty and Jesus Alou
White is traded to the Cards for Sad Sam Jones. Altho' Jones had a couple
of nice years for the Giants, this was a minus deal as White was a stud 1964 - Catcher Randy Hundley, 22, is a rookie. He was signed in 1960

1959 - Slugger Willie McCovey is rookie of the year on the heels of Orlando 1965 - Outfielder Ken Henderson, 19, is a rookie. He was signed in 1964
Cepeda winning the award in 1958. Mays-McCovey-Cepeda was an
awsome middle of the lineup and they were young. All three Hall of Famers. 1965 - 2B Tito Fuentes, 21, is a rookie. He was signed in 1962
McCovey, 21, was originally signed in 1955
1966 - Twenty five year old lefthander Ray Sadecki is obtained from
1960 - Outfielder Matty Alou, 21, is a rookie. He was signed in 1957  the Cards in exchange for Orlando Cepeda. This deal was a disaster.

1960 - Hall of Fame righthander Juan Marichal, 22, is a rookie. He was the 1967 - Nineteen year old lefty Ron Bryant is a rookie. He was picked
ace of the staff in the Sixties. Juan was signed in 1957  in the 22nd round of the 1965 amateur draft

1960 - Lefthander Billy O'Dell, 27, and righthander Billy Loes, 30, are obtained  1967 - Mike McCormick wins Cy Young. He is also Comeback Player
from the Orioles for Jackie Brandt. This was a classic win-win deal as the of the year.
Orioles were swimming in good pitchers and the Giants were swimming
in good outfielders. O'Dell would have a couple of nice seasons for SF 1967 - Orlando Cepeda, who was traded away by the Giants the
previous season, wins the NL MVP Award as he leads St. Louis to a
1960 - The Giants move out of Seals Stadium and into Candlestick Park World Series title. Giant fans are understandably unhappy particularly
Candlestick Park was a typical Stoneham not think it thru blunder. It was a cold, because the guy he was traded for, Ray Sadecki, stunk up the place
dank venue with high winds - you have to wonder if Stoneham didn't have a deed
for the Golden Gate Bridge that someone sold him buried amongst his posessions 1968 - Outfielder Gary Matthews,17, is selected in the first round
of the draft. He is a rookie four years hence
1961 - Catcher Tom Haller, 24, is a rookie. He was signed in 1958
1968 - Outfielder Gary Maddox, 18, is selected in the second round
1961 - Righthander Bobby Bolin, 22, is a rookie. He was signed in 1956 of the draft. He is a rookie four years hence.

1961 - Stu Miller is blown off the mound in one of the two all star games played 1968 - Outfielder Bobby Bonds, 22, is a rookie. He was signed in
that season - this one took place in Candlestick Park '64. People thought Bonds would be the next Willie Mays. They
were wrong. Altho' that was an unfair comparison to put on any player
1962 - Outfielder Manny Mota, 24, is a rookie. He was signed in 1957  and Bobby turned out to be a pretty good player, but always
disappointed because he was not Mays.
1962 - Ace Lefty Billy Pierce, 35, is obtained in a deal with the White Sox
He was a big contributor to the pennant drive going 16-6 1969 - Outfielder George Foster, 20, is a rookie. He was drafted in the
third round of the 1968 draft.
1962 -The Giants beat the Dodgers in best of three playoff to win the pennant
This was their first world series appearance in San Francisco. The next one  1969 - The Giants finish second for the fifth season in a row
would be 27 years hence in 1989.
1969 - Chub Feeney leaves as Giants GM. This is a real blow to the
franchise as he was never really replaced. During Chub's twenty
three year tenure, the Giants were perennial contenders.
