  1980 - The Giants are not in a good place coming into the decade having  Chilli Davis (17.05) -   51  
  finished 71-91 in 1979. There were only a couple of key youngsters on the  Jack Clark (18.07) -   38  
  roster offensively in Jack Clark, 24, and Larry Herndon, 26. On the mound Jeff Leonard (9.46) -   30  
   there was a smattering of young arms, but no studs in the group.  Brett Butler (8.75) -   27

  1981 - Hard hitting outfielder Chilli Davis, 21, is a rookie. He was Kevin Mitchell (12.49) -   25

    1986 - The influx of young talent augments a group of youngsters already  
  1981 - Frank Robinson becomes the NL's first black manager on the roster. The existing guys: SS Juan Uribe, 27; 3B Chris Brown, 24;  
    OF Dan Gladden, 28; OF Chili Davis. 26; OF Rob Deer, 25; C Matt Nokes,22;   
  1982 - Lefthander Vida Blue is dealt to the Royals for twenty four year Pitchers: Atlee Hammaker, 28; Jim Gott, 26, Bill Laskey, 28: Scott Garrelts, 24;  
  old lefty Atlee Hammaker. Mark Davis, 25; and Jeff Robinson. 25. The new guys, who are for the most   
    part, a lot better are: 1B Will Clark,22; 2B Robbie Thompson, 24; OF Candy  
   1984 - Frank Robinson becomes the NL's first black manager to be fired Maldonado, 25; C Bob Melvin, 24; OF Mike Aldrete, 25; and LHP Terry  
  He didn't have the horses to compete with in San Francisco Mulholland, 23.  This is now a serious amount of young talent to work with.  
     
  1985 - The Giants lose 100 games for the first time in franchise history 1987 - Slugging third baseman Kevin Mitchell, 25, is obtained from the  
    Padres in a seven player deal.  
  1986 - First baseman Will Clark is a twenty two year old rookie. He was    
  the second overall pick in the 1985 draft 1987 - Veteran thirty eight year old righthander Rick Reuschel is obtained  
    from the Pirates in a trade. There's still plenty left in the tank.  
  1986 - Second Baseman Robby Thompson, 21, who was selected in the    
   first round of the 1983 draft by the Giants comes up as a rookie 1987 - Righthander John Burkett, 22, is a rookie. He was a sixth round  
    pick in the 1983 draft. He comes up as a rookie in 1991  
  1986 - Third Baseman Matt Williams, 19, is the third overall pick in    
  the 1987 draft. He comes up as a rookie in 1989 1988 - Righthanded reliever Rod Beck 19, is obtained from the A's for  
    someone named Charlie Corbell in an odd little minor league deal.  
  1986 - San Francisco gets a top management team together for the first      
  time since Chub Feeney left in 1969 when they hire Al Rosen as GM  1989 - San Francisco makes it to the World Series on the strength of a  
  and Roger Craig as manager in 1986. The team immediately responds core of young hitters led by Kevin Mitchell, 27, Wil Clark, 25, Robbie  
  to Craig's presence with a twenty one game gain in the standings. Thompson, 27, and Matt Williams, 23 and a deep pitching staff led by  
  The Giants will contend thru the rest of the decade, winning the forty year old ace righthander Rick Reuschel.  
   Division in '87 and '89 with ninety win seasons.    
    1989 - An earthquake strikes the San Francisco Bay area a half hour  
     before the first pitch for game 3 of the World Series at Candlestick Park  
    was to be thrown. It was a magnitude 7.1 quake. The Bay area Series  
    between the A's and the Giants was delayed 10 days as the quake  
    devastated the Bay area.
