The top players on the 1990 roster: Notable Events:
(Note that the cupboard was not very full)
1B - Glenn Davis, 29, will be dealt to the Orioles for three top players in '92 1994 - New owner Drayton McLane replaces GM Bill Wood with
2B - Craig Biggio, 24, 1st round pick in '87 - future HOFer  Bob Watson. That's the thanks Wood gets for building the foundation
3B - Ken Caminiti, 27, 3rd round pick in '84 draft  of a contender. Luckily, Watson is top notch so there's no drop off.
OF - Luis Gonzalez, 23, 4th round pick in '88 draft
Lefty - Jim DeShaies, 30 1994 - The players strike ends the season after only 115 games with the Astros
Righty - Mike Scott, 35 a half game out of first. Jeff Bagwell is MVP and his numbers with only three
quarters of the season played are pretty awesome - 39 homers, 116 ribbies
1991 - Bill Wood had been hired as Astros GM in '88 replacing
Dick Wagner. 1995 - Outfielder Derek Bell, 25, is obtained in a twelve player deal that
had Ken Caminiti, Steve Finley and Andujar Cedeno going to the Padres
1991 - Future Hall of Fame first baseman Jeff Bagwell, 23, is stolen
from the Red Sox in a deal for reliever Larry Andersen. 1995 - Lefty relief ace Billy Wagner, 23, is a rookie. He was the twelfth overall
He becomes Rookie of the Year selection in the 1993 draft

1991 - With Jeff Bagwell in the fold, Glenn Davis is deemed expendable  1996 - GM Bob Watson leaves for the Yankees, but the Astros are still in
and is dealt to the Orioles for three top talents:  good hands with his replacement Gerry Hunsicker
center fielder Steve Finley, 26; and twenty four year old  righthanders
Pete Harnisch and Curt Schilling.  1997 - Righthander Jose Lima, 24, and catcher Brad Ausmus, 28, are obtained
Interestingly, by fleecing both the Red Sox and the Orioles in a    from Detroit in a nine player deal.

1991 - Twenty two year old righthander Darryl Kile is a rookie.  signed as an IFA by Houston in 1991
Tragedy strikes again when Darryl dies of a heart attack at age
thirty three in 2002 while with the Cardinals 1997 - Hard hitting outfielder Bobby Abreu, 22, is taken from the Astros in the
expansion draft by Tampa Bay. He was an IFA in 1990. One that got away.
1992 - Wood gives away Schilling to the Phillies in a horrific trade for
24 year old righty Jason Grimsley who never even pitches for Houston. 1997 - The Astros win the Division, but lose their fourth straight post season
series without a victory (dating back to the Eighties), this time to the Braves
1992 - Righty Shane Reynolds is a twenty four year old rookie.
He was a third round pick in the '89 draft. 1998 - Outfielder Moises Alou, 31, is obtained from Florida in a four player deal

1992 - The Astros right the ship, finishing over .500.  1998 - Outfielder Carl Everett, 27, is obtained from the Mets in a deal for John
They would finish over .500 for the next eight seasons and fourteen  Hudek
of the next fifteen, many of those years as a legitimate contender.
GM Bill Wood did a really nice job of building the foundation, 1998 - The Astros win the Division title, having overpaid big time at mid season
a lot of it thru trades, which is a very rare accomplishment. (Freddie Garcia, Carlos Guillen and John Halama) to get Randy Johnson
for half a season. The Big Unit did go 10-1 to lead the Astros to
1993 - In another swindle, the 'stros pick up ace lefty Mike Hampton  the Division, but lost a couple of toughies in the playoffs to the
from Seattle for overrated outfield prospect Eric Anthony.  Padres, who upset Houston on the way to the pennant.
Altho' the Houston GM was mostly known (unfairly) as the guy who  Johnson left for free agency after the season.
passed up Derek Jeter in the '92 draft, Bill Wood was going around
snookering lots of folks out of big time prospects. 1999 - Houston wins the Division for the third season in a

Pete Harnish and Steve Finley in the aforementioned deals with  their sixth straight post season series loss without a win.
AL clubs and gave up very little in return.
1999 - The last game at the Astrodome after thirity five years out of the sun
1993 - John McMullen, having appeared to have lost interest in
the team's fortunes after losing the '86 pennant,  finally sells
the club ( to Drayton McLane )
