  Notable Events:
    Outfield:
2010 - Coming into the Twenty Teens the Royals had only one winning Alex Gordon (31.55) -   64
season (barely in '03) in the previous sixteen years. Royals owner David Lorenzo Cain (25.06) -   60
Glass is a  Walmart exec who, by definition, was not big on spending  Billy Butler (9.57) -   27
money on the help. This implies that owning a baseball team where Jarrod Dyson (12.37) -   22
the help is what gives the franchise its value is probably not the best Jeff Francoer (0.18) -   11
gig for him. Despite this, there was hope. The Royals had hired a top  David DeJesus (1.86) -   10
notch GM in Drayton Moore in 2009, who was able to build a contending Jorge Soler (3.09) -   9
club by mid decade out of all of the high draft picks that the Royals
were getting and also while doing it on the cheap.  Notable Events:

2010 - Roster - the cupboard was far from bare due to a plethora of  2015 - The Royals beef up their pitching as they're going for it all
high draft picks in the Oughts:   RHP - Edinson Volquez , 31, free agent from Pittsburgh
1B - Billy Butler, 24, fourteenth overall pick in 2004 draft   RHP - Chris Young, 36, RHP from Seattle
SS - Yuniesky Betancourt, 28, dealt to Milwaukee in Greinke deal in 2011   RHP - Johnny Cueto, 29, in a trade deadline deal with the Reds
CF - David DeJesus, 30, dealt to Oakland in 2011 prior to FA walk year
OF - Alex Gordon, 26, 2nd overall pick in 2005 draft 2015 - All the maneuverings pay off as the Royals win the world series.
OF - Gregor Blanco, 26, dealt to Washington in 2011  The newly acquired starters were key.
OF - Jarrod Dyson, 25, 50th round pick in 2006 draft The Morales acquistion seemed to be a catalyst for the
Closer - Joakim Soria, 26, Rule 5 draft from SD in 2006, rest of the lineup as everybody was significantly better than 2014
   injured in 2012 and released
Closer - Greg Holland, 24, tenth round pick in 2007 draft 2016 - RHP Ian Kennedy, 31, is signed as a free agent from San Diego
RHP - Zach Greinke, 26, sixth overall pick in the 2002 draft,
dealt to Milwaukee in 2011 for four prospects, all of whom 2016 - Maybe it's a hangover from winning the World Series,
turned out to be excellent players, but the Royals plummet sixteen games in the standings to .500.
CF Lorenzo Cain, 24, SS Alcides Escobar, 23. It's no one thing or player. Everybody's production declines,
RHP Jake Odorizzi, 21 and closer Jeremy Jeffress, 23.  some more than others. Injuries to Moustakas and Holland
didn't help, but it was a general malaise more than anything.
  2011 - 3B Mike Moustakas, 22, is a rookie.
He was the 2nd overall pick in the 2007 draft 2017 - RHP Yordano Ventura, 25, dies in a car accident

2011 - 1B Eric Hosmer, 21, is a rookie. 2017 - Carbon copy of 2016. Kansas City is no longer an elite team.
He was the 3rd overall pick in the 2008 draft One must presume that Royals management still thought they had a
chance at bouncing back into contention because they are not sellers
2011 - C Salvador Perez, 21, is a rookie. He was an IFA in 2006 at the trade deadline.

2011 - LHP Danny Duffy, 22, is a rookie.  They could have gotten some value back for the likes of Eric Hosmer,
He was a 3rd round pick in the 2007 draft  Lorenzo Cain, Mike Moustakas, Whit Merrifeild, Salvador Perez,
Alex Gordon, Ian Kennedy and Jason Vargas
2012 - RHP Jeremy Guthrie, 33, is stolen from the Rockies Several of these guys were still around at the end of the decade. Why?
   in exchange for Jonathan Sanchez
2018 - Cain, Hosmer Vargas and Davis leave for free agency before the
2013 - RHP Yordano Ventura, 22, debuts. He was an IFA in 2008 season. Mike Moustakas is dealt for not much at mid season in his
walk year. Perez, Merrifield and Kennedy remain with the club.
2013 - GM Drayton Moore feels that he's stocked enough young talent  For all the talent Kansas City still had around at mid season 2017,
that the Royals are ready to take it to the next level even tho' they were  they've got nothing to show for it as they hit rock bottom and
only 72-90 in 2012. The Royals send stud outfield prospect Wil Myers, 21,  need a complete rebuild.
a 3rd round pick in the 2009 draft, and RHP Jake Odorizzi, who they had
acquired two years earlier in the Zach Greinke deal, to Tampa for a couple 2019 - The Royals are officially doormats. They've got a few decent young
of studly veteran pitchers in James Shields, 31, and Wade Davis, 27. players in their farm system, but if they had played their cards right
The move works as the Royals gain 14 games in the standings to 86-76  they could have had a lot more young talent floating around. There's not
and are in position to contend moving forward.  enough young talent around to right the ship and they should trade anyone
other than Mondesi (who's not untouchable) for anything young of value.
2014 - With all the talent on hand, the Royals finally make it to the post   DH Jorge Soler, 27, obtained from the Cubs in '17 for Wade Davis
season and all the way to the World Series before losing to the Giants. Huge bat, this guy needs to be traded for some younger prospects
It's really the pitching that does it as none of the high potential hitters has   3B Hunter Dozier, 27, 1st round pick in '13
really broken out. Four starters win in double figures and the fifth, Good hitter. Has some trade value
Duffy, goes 9-12 2.53. Meanwhile the bullpen is other worldy with  □ 2B Whit Merrifield, 30, 9th tounf pick in '10
Holland saving 46 games on a 1.44. ERA and setup men Kelvin Herrera,  This guy can fly, should still have some trade value.
  sporting a 1.41. ERA, and Davis, pitching to a 1.00 ERA    SS Adalberto Mondesi, 23, IFA '11 - He's a keeper
(in addition to going 9-2 with 3 saves)   RHP Brad Keller, 23, purchased from Reds '18
Orginally an 8th round pick, he has no pedigree, but has performed well
2015 - To beef up their relatively anemic attack, the Royals sign DH  □ RHP Jakob Junis, 26, 29th round pick in '11
Kendrys Morales, who is thirty two, as a free agent from Seattle.   RHP Danny Duffy, 30, 3rd round pick in '07
Morales goes 22-106.290 and is a force in the middle of the KC's lineup. Junis and Duffy have been innings eaters, they may have some value to a
contender trying to fill in the back of their rotation.
