   1970 - The Phillies come into the decade on a downer as they are in the third Oscar Gamble (2) -   1  
   year of a seven year sub .500 run. There's a workable core of young talent

    1B - Willie Montanez, 22, trade from Cardinals in '70    
    3B - Don Money, 23 - trade from Pirates in '68 1975 - Garry Maddox is obtained from the Giants in return for first  
    SS - Larry Bowa, 24 -  rookie, amateur free agent in '65 baseman Willie Montanez. Great deal for the Phils as Maddox   
   will be with the club in their division title season '76 is an outstanding center fielder, an excellent baserunner and a fine hitter  
    OF - Greg Luzinski, 19 - rookie, 11th overall pick in '68 draft    
   will be with the club in their division title season '76 1975 - Philadelphia acquires ace lefty reliever Tug McGraw, 31, from the  
    OF - Larry Hisle, 23, 2nd round pick in '65, dealt to LA in '72  Mets for three pretty good players - Mac Scarce, Del Unser, and John   
    OF - Oscar Gamble, 20, trade from Cubs in '69, dealt to Cleveland in '73 Stearns. McGraw is the penultimate piece of an outstanding bullpen that was   
    RHP - Rick Wise, 24, amateur free agent in '63  a major part of the Phillies upcoming success. Earlier Ron Schueler had  
    Reliever - Grant Jackson, 27, amateur free agent in '61, dealt to Orioles in '71  been acquired from the Braves in '74; Gene Garber from KC in '74;   
    Reliever - Dick Selma, 26, trade from Cubs in '69 and Wayne Twitchell from Milwaukee in '71  
       
  1971 - 3B Mike Schmidt is drafted in the 2nd round of the amateur draft 1975 - After seven losing seasons, the Phillies embark on the  
  as a twenty one year old. He comes up the following season. Mike goes most successful run in their history - 10 straight winning seasons  
  on to have a stellar Hall of Fame career as a great slugger and fielder. The young team that GM John Quinn had been assembling prior to retiring  
    has been improving steadily as the decade has progressed. Schmidt,   
  1971 - The Phillies move into a new ballpark, Veterans Stadium. Luzinski, Boone, Bowa, Maddox and Carlton was a tremendous nucleus.  
  It is one of the many charmless, cookie cutter ballparks built in    
  the big leagues in this era.  1976 - Closer Ron Reed, 33, is picked up from the Braves for Mike Anderson.  
     He is the final, and best, piece of the outstanding bullpen that the Phillies  
  1972 - Catcher Bob Boone comes up as a twenty four year old rookie.   have assembled.  
  He becomes one of the top catchers in the game during a lengthy career.    
    1976 - The Phillies win the first of three straight Eastern   
  1972 - In a flurry of excellent moves, the Phillies build the Division title winning  Division titles and the first of two successive hundred win   
  rotation of '76 - '78: seasons. However, they get beat in the NLCS all three years.  
    RHP - Larry Christensen, 18, drafted in the first round This Phillies team's talent level puts them in the conversation as one  
    LHP - Tom Underwood, 18, drafted in the second round  of the great all time teams despite their lack of post season success.

  1973 - A changing of the guard. Owner Bob Carpenter Jr steps down as  Todd Christensen, 22; Tom Underwood, 22  
  team President, John Quinn retires as General Manager and Frank Lucchesi   RP-Ron Reed, 33; Tug McGraw; 31; Gene Garber, 28;  
   is let go as manager. They figure fresh blood is needed as the season  Wayne Twitchell,28; Ron Schueler, 28  
  losing streak has now reached five. Taking their place are Bob Carpenter III  
   as owner, Paul Owens as GM and Danny Ozark as manager 1979 - Philadelphia drops to fourth place. No time to panic yet as the team's  
    nucleus are still in their prime or just past.
