1960 - The Pirates win their first World Title since 1925, beating the Yankees Ron Brand (0.48) -    0
with a dramatic bottom of the ninth of game seven home run by Bill  Chris Cannizzaro (0.41) -   0
Mazeroski. The Pirates have the MVP (Dick Groat) and Cy Young (Vernon  Ozzie Virgil (0.07) -    0
Law). The Bucs gained 17 games in the standings from the previous year. Hal R Smith (-0.07) -    0
The team, itself, was virtually identical to 1959 and most of the team  Danny Kravitz (-0.1) -   0
performed pretty much the same as they did in 1959. There were five  Bob Oldis (-0.13) -   0
players who accounted for the upturn. Cy Young winner Vernon Law was  Cal Neeman (-0.14) -    0
not one of them. He performed at an extremely high level both seasons. Jesse Gonder (-0.36) -    0
MVP shortstop Dick Groat went from .275 to a league leading .325 batting Elmo Plaskett (-0.43) -    0
average. Rightfielder Roberto Clemente had a big power upsurge from four Orlando MacFarlane (-0.48) -    0
to sixteen homers and also moved to an over .300 batting average. Utility
man / catcher Hal Smith, picked up from Kansas City, added an excellent First Basemen:
bat coming off the bench. On the mound, veteran righty Bob Friend improved Donn Clendenon (17.61) -   51
from 8-19 to 18-12. Veteran lefty Vinegar Bend Mizell was obtained from the  Dick Stuart (3.08) -   20
  Cards and went 13-5 Mickey Vernon (-0.03) -   0

1961 - Twenty three year old righthander Alvin O'Neal McBean is a rookie. Second Basemen:
He was signed in 1958 Bill Mazeroski (27.63) -   36
  Dick Schofield (7.71) -   5
1961 - Twenty five year old first baseman / outfielder Donn Clendenon is a
rookie. He was signed in 1957. ShortStop:
    Gene Alley (21.04) -   35
1961 - Pittsburgh crashes. They drop twenty games in the standings to  Dick Groat (10.97) -   24
sixth place and a below .500 record. It was hard to say who the real Pirates Fred Patek (1.8) -   5
were in this period. Over the nine year stretch from 1958 to 1966, the Bucs Jose Pagan (2.64) -    4
finished well above .500 five times and below .500 four times, pretty much Andre Rodgers (0.82) -    0
alternating from one extreme to the other in successive seasons. I have no Don Money (0) -   0
explanation for this. The 1961 team was pretty much the same players as Coot Veal (-0.03) -    0
the 1960 championship club. The big problem in 1961 was that the starting Julio Gotay (-0.09) -    0
pitching collapsed. Law got hurt and dropped from twenty wins to three. Johnny Logan (-0.35) -    0
Friend regressed to 14-19. Mizell's ERA ballooned to 5.04. Face went from Gene Michael (-0.46) -    0
bullpen ace to a reliever with a 3.82 ERA. Too bad because some of the
Pirate hitters had huge years. Clemente batted .351 with twenty three home Third Base:
runs. Dick Stuart hit 35 homers and batted over .300.  Bob Bailey (9.73) -   22
    Maury Wills (7.77) -   17
1962 - Lefthander Bob Veale is a 26 year old rookie. He was signed in 1958 Don Hoak (10.05) -   16

1962 - Bob Bailey, 19 year old third baseman is a rookie. He was signed in '61 Outfield:

    Bob Skinner (6.83) -   23
  1963 - Catcher Jim Pagliaroni, 25, and pitcher Don Schwall, 27, are  Manny Mota (6.56) -   22
obtained from Boston for Dick Stuart. Gino Cimoli (-0.51) -   2
    Manny Jimenez (0.64) -   0
  1963 - Shortstop Gene Alley, 23, is a rookie. He was signed in 1959. Walt Moryn (-0.29) -    0
    Ron Davis (-0.65) -    0
1964 - righthander Steve Blass is a twenty two year old rookie.  Ted Savage (-0.67) -    0
