Pittsburgh dropped unexpectedly in the standings from two consecutive lackluster Jack Suwinski (1.24) -  15
seasons at 76-86 to a poor 71-91 in '26. The culprits were the hitters as the pitching Connor Joe (1.3) -  9
staff actually did quite well giving up 46 runs less than the league average. Ben Gamel (0.07) -  7
The hitters, meanwhile collapsed from a lackluster 46 runs below league average Colin Moran (0.45) -   5
in '24 to a whopping 138 runs below league average in '25. i.e. they sucked and
were dead last In the majors in runs scored. Pittsburgh addressed the problem in the Notable Events:
offseason picking up a couple of good hitters in a trade with Tampa - 2B Brandon Lowe
and OF Jake Mangum. They also picked up aging slugger DH Marcell Ozuna from 2020 -  Like the movie Awakenings, the Pirates had this tiny window of
the Braves. All of this losing has produced a bunch of high draft picks in the  success in '13-'15, '18 amidst a general sea of failure. They went back
organization. The Bucs are already reaping dividends from '23 overall #1 pick to failure mode in '19 and then continued to be awful over the first half
Paul Skenes. They also have several other high picks from recent years who appear of the 2020 decade.Shame for Pirate fans that it couldn't last longer.
poised to produce: P Bubba Chandler, P Jared Jones, P Carmen Mlodzinski,
P Seth Hernandez and OF Konner Griffin.  2020 - Robert Nutting has been the owner since '07. There have been four
winning seasons in 19 years thru the '25 season. And counting.
Starting Pitchers: Compared to the previous regime, Nutting is a savior.Which is nuts, but true.
  □ RHP Paul Skenes, 24, '23 draft 1st overall pick, '25 10-10 1.97
  □ RHP Mitch Keller, 30, '14 draft 2nd round pick, '25 6-15 4.19 Ben Cherington, former Red Sox and Blue Jays GM, was hired on in '20
  □ RHP Bubba Chandler, 23, '21 draft 3rd round pick, '25 4-1 4.02 by the Pirates. Got off to a bad start in '20. Chris Archer deal in '18 sealed
  □ RHP Braxton Ashcraft, 26, '18 draft second round pick, '25 4-4 2.71 previous GM Neal Huntington's fate. Bucs gave up Shane Baz,
  □ RHP Jose Urquidy, 31, '26 FA froom Detroit, '25 0-0 7.71  Austin Meadows and Tyler Glasnow to the Rays for, essentially, nothing.
  □ RHP Jared Jones, 24, '20 draft 2nd round pick, '24 6-8 4.14 Cherington has been an abject failure, but he's still around.
Skenes is the number one pitcher in baseball. Chandler and Ashcraft are up and Can't blame Cherington too much as he doesn't exactly have a budget
coming. Jones was looking like a potential stud until he got hurt. He is back now. to work with.
The Bucs have some talent in this group.
Derek Shelton was hired on as manager in '20 and somehow lasted until
  25. Again, you can't blame Shelton too much considering what he had
  Relief Pitchers: to work with.
  □ Closer RHP Dennis Santana, 30, '24 FA from NYY, '25 4-5 2.15 16saves
  □ LHP Gregory Soto, 31, '25 FA from Baltimore, '25 1-3 4.50
  □ LHP Mason Montgomery, 25, '26 Trade from TB, '25  1-3 5.67
  □ RHP Isaac Mattson, 30, '24 Trade from Twins, '25 3-3 2.40
  □ Justin Lawrence, 31, '25 FA from Colorado, '25 0-1 0.51
  □ Carmen Mlodzinski, 27, '20 draft 1st round pick, '25 5-8 3.55
  □ Yohan Ramirez, 31, '25 FA from Boston, '25 3-3 5.40
  □ Kyle Nicolas, 27, '22 Trade from Miami, '25 1-2 4.74
The bullpen has a chance to be solid. Santana proved he can close last year.
Mlodzinski looks like he might be able to start living up to his potential.
Montgomery, Mattson and Soto all have a chance of being good.

  □ OF Jhostynxon Garcia, 23, '26 Trade from Boston, '25 0 0 .143
Worst offensive team in baseball last year. Reynolds, Cruz and Bart all nosedived
in '25. The Pirates are looking for those three to rebound. They are good hitters.
The Bucs dealt some of their excess pitching (you don't hear that every year in
Pittsburgh) to Tampa for a couple of good sticks. 2B Brandon Lowe slugged 31 homers
last year and Jake Mangum batted .296. The Pirates also picked up aging slugger
Marcell Ozuna from the Braves. He's not nearly what he was, but he can still hit.
Add phenom SS Konnor Griffin to the mix and suddenly the Pirate offense no longer
looks horrendous. Rounding out the lineup are three decent hitters SS Nick
Gonzalez, 1B Spencer Horwitz and OF Ryan O'Hearn, picked up in the off season
from San Diego. That gives you nine guys who are not automatic outs, a big
  improvement over last season.
