2000 - San Diego had won two division titles in the previous four years and Mike Cameron (7.59) -   22
made it to the world series just two years earlier, but, after a twenty four game Dave Roberts (5.11) -   19
drop in the standings in '99, the Padres had completely lost their mojo by 2000. Tony Gwynn Jr (0.97) -   9

four times and are able to win the Division twice, albeit against weak
competition, in those two seasons. Another ugly trend that the Padres  2006 - In a phenomenal trade for the Padres, they acquire local San Diego
continue in the Oughts is their horrific drafting in the first round. Including first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, 24, from Texas in a six player deal.
supplemental first round picks, San Diego drafts only one decent player Gonzalez's presence in the lineup propels San Diego to a Division title with
(shortstop Khalil Greene, 22, 13th overall in 2002) out of twenty five first round  88 wins. Gonzalez was the number one overall selection in the 2000 draft
picks. That seems almost impossible. And, they have their obligatory overall  by Florida. Unclear why both Florida and Texas would give up on a future
number one pick bust in pitcher Matt Bush (2004) - altho' he ends up making   stud who was still only twenty four. Anyway, the San Diego home cooking
it to the big leagues in 2016 after a remarkable odyssey.  sure agreed with Adrian.
Kevin Towers is the GM and he brings very little to the table.
He kept his job thru almost all of the decade on the back of of his initial 2006 - 2B Josh Barfield, 23, is a rookie. He was a 4th round pick in the
flush of success with the club in the mid to late nineties.  2001 draft. Due to his bloodlines, his father was slugger Jesse Barfield,
expectations were high for Josh, but they shouldn't have been.
2000 - OF Xavier Nady, 21, is selected in 2nd round of draft. Debuts in 2000 He wasn't that good.

2000 - In another big trade that could be categorized as BlockBuster, the 2007 - Righty reliever Heath Bell, 27, is acquired from the Mets in an
Padres acquire outfielder Ryan Klesko, 29, from the Braves. Others involved  unheralded 'four player deal.

Wally Joyner and outfielder Reggie Sanders.
2007 - 2B Marcus Giles, 29, signs as a free agent from the Braves, joining
2003 - Yet another big trade, outfielder Brian Giles, 32, a San Diego native, is  his brother. Marcus was one of the better second basemen in the game
acquired from the Pirates for outfielder Jason Bay, 24, and lefty Oliver Perez,21.  while with Atlanta. After a bad season in San Diego, Marcus was released.
Not a good trade for the Padres as Bay turns into a star in Pittsburgh. It appears that he lost heart after failing with his home town Padres and
threw in the towel at the young age of twenty nine.
2004 - The Padres gain twenty three games in the standings to 87 victories Very odd turn of events in this one.
and third place. It begins a mini-run of four plus .500 seasons. Reasons for the

Shortstop Khalil Greene, 28, who looked like a budding superstar in 2007
2005 - Catcher Nick Hundley, 21, is drafted in the 2nd round. He debuts in '08 with a 27-97-.274 stats line, ended up with 10-35.213 line.
Unclear if the Padres thought that Nick was related to former standout big league The Padres went from a young star studded double play combo in '07 with
catchers Randy and Todd Hundley (who were father and son). He wasn't Giles and Greene, to bupkus in '08. That hurt big time. The bullpen which
