  Notable Events: ShortStop:
    Everth Cabrera (5.21) -   23
2010 - The Padres franchise had been floundering under the ownership of Freddy Galvis (2.34) -   5
John Moores, the former CEO of the bankrupt San Diego based Peregrine
Corporation. Moores bought the Padres in 2003 and altho' they made the  Third Base:
playoffs a couple of times, it was because they headed a weak division and Chase Headley (17.21) -   36
were quickly eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. Yangveris Solarte (6.24) -   17
Beginning in 2009, Moores began selling off his shares to a group led by  Cory Spangenberg (3.29) -   9
Jeff Moorad. The deal ended up falling thru and in 2012, a group led by  Manny Machado (2.59) -   4
Ronald Fowler that included family members of former Dodger owner
Walter O'Malley, bought the club. Unfortunately for Padres fans,  the new  Outfield:
ownership and their management staff were not only not better, but things  Wil Venable (11.1) -   39
appear to be worse. The Padres have had a succession of weak GMs.  Cameron Maybin (6.57) -   26
The three in this decade haven't done anything to alter that perception.  Chris Donorfia (9.81) -   25
Coming off losing seasons in '08 and '09, San Diego has an aberrant good  Manuel Margot (6.4) -   24
  year in 2010 going 90-72. Hunter Renfroe (6.4) -   17
The good times don't last and since 2010 San Diego has been battling to stay Seth Smith (3.38) -   14
out of the Division cellar the entire decade. Travis Jankowski (2.31) -   13
  Fernando Tatis (4.13) -   11
  2011 - San Diego trades their best player, 1B Adrian Gonazlez, 29,   Matt Kemp (0.68) -   11
to Boston for three players including 1B prospect Anthony Rizzo, 21.  BJ Upton (3.36) -   11
In a supremely dumb move, the Padres turn around a year later and deal Justin Upton (4.26) -   10
Rizzo to the Cubs for pitcher Andrew Cashner.
It's bad enough when you have shallow pockets causing you to dump stars like  Notable Events:
Gonzalez. It's even worse when you shoot yourself in the foot because you
don't have a clue as to what you are doing.and get rid of primo prospects  2016 - The Padres have their worst season of the decade thus far at 68-94.
like Rizzo.  No money and no smarts does not add up to success. Looking at their roster, there doesn't appear to be much reason for
  optimism moving forward.
2012 - The Padres deal young ace Mat Latos, 23, to the Reds for four
players. Three are prospects who were recent number one picks in the draft  2018 - San Diego suffers thru their eighth straight losing season.
and the fourth is a live armed veteran.  Altho' Latos is young and supremely  They are a bad team and have not been competitive throughout this streak.
talented, the Padres need young prospects, so it's not a bad  trade at the  [1]
time. Latos has a couple of big years in Cincinnati before hurting his arm. 2019 - On the bright side, all of this losing has beefed up the farm system
Meanwhile no one, except for Grandal who they trade away,  that the  with high draft picks so good things may be in the offing just around
Padres gets back is anything more than a servicable major leaguer.  the corner. The Padres have the number one rated farm system.
That being said, you can't fault them for trying on this one.  There are a handful of keepers on the big league roster moving forward:
1B - Yonder Alonso, 25, 7th overall pick in 2008 draft   SS Fernando Tatis, 20, trade from Chicago for James Shields '16
RHP - Brad Boxberger, 24, first round pick in 2009 draft   3B Manny Machado, 26, high priced FA from LA '19
C - Yasmani Grandal, 23, 12th overall pick in 2010 draft   OF Wil Myers, 28, trade from TB '15
RHP - Edinson Volquez, 28   OF Manny Margot, 24, trade from Boston '16
OF Franmil Reyes, 23, IFA '11
2012 - Lights out closer Heath Bell is lost to the Marlins in Free Agency   OF Hunter Renfroe, 27, 1st round pick '13
  □ RHP Joey Lucchesi, 26, 4th round pick '16
2014 - 3B Chase Headley is dealt to the Yankees at the trade deadline for 3B Tatis, Machado and Renfroe give the Padres a big time middle of the lineup
Yangervis Solarte, 26 that compares favorably with anybody's. The challenge is to fill in around
those three with their terrific minor league system moving forward.
2014 - Closer Huston Street, 30, is dealt to LA at the trade deadline

2016 - RHP Ian Kennedy, 31, is lost to KC in Free Agency

2016 - OF Matt Kemp, 31, is dealt to the Braves at the trade deadline.
