2010 - Tampa had been hapless losers from their inception in the first Outfield:
   ten years of existence (1998 - 2007). Kevin Kiermaier (26.59) -   53
In 2008, the Rays suddenly became one of the top teams in the game BJ Upton (7.36) -   38
mostly due to the maturing of a bunch of high draft picks that the losing Mathew Joyce (10.07) -   28
had provided them. In 2010, the Rays were in the midst of riding the Desmond Jennings (13.4) -   27
wave of their talent infusion. The top talent on the 2010 roster: Steven Souza (6.25) -   15
C - Dioner Navarro, 26, will leave for LA as a free agent in 2011 Mallex Smith (5.18) -   14

will leave for Atlanta as a free agent in 2013
OF - Carl Crawford, 30, will leave for Boston as a free agent in 2011 Notable Events:
OF - Matt Joyce, 25, hot prospect in 2010,
is a tepid suspect by the time he leaves in 2015 2014 - The bubble bursts. After six seasons as a contender, Tampa falls below
OF - Rocco Baldelli, 28, 6th overall pick in 2000 draft,  .500 and stays there. The run was eventually going to end as they could not
retires after 2010 derailed by health issues afford to keep the young studs they had accumulated with their high draft picks.
OF - Desmond Jennings, 23, 10th round draft pick in 2006. They'll need to lose consistently for a few years and draft well to cycle back
Lots of speed, weak stick  up to the top, hopefully by the end of the decade.
RHP - Jeremny Hellickson, 23, 4th round pick in 2005 draft, The decline was accelerated a bit by injuries to several high quality pitchers
Traded to Arizona in 2015 such as Matt Moore, Alex Cobb and Jeff Niemann. Tampa may have been
LHP - David Price, 24, first overall pick in 2007 draft, willing and able to spend a bit more in order to continue their run of success
will be traded to Detroit in 2014  a bit longer if there was still a possiblity of the club still contending.
RHP - Wade Davis, 24, 3rd round pick in 2004 draft   No point in doing so once they dipped under .500
dealt to KC in 2013 for Wil Myers and Jake Odorizzi
RHP - Matt Garza, 26, dealt to Cubs in 2011 for Chris Archer, 22 2018 - Tampa gains 10 games in the standings from 2017 and 22 games
RHP - Jeff Niemann, 27, 4th overall pick in 2004 draft,  in the standings, overall, from 2016.
retires due to injury in 2013 The Rays finsh a surpising 90-72 behind excellent pitching. Players of note:
RHP - James Shields, 28, 16th round pick in 2000 draft     LHP - Blake Snell, 25, 1st round 2011 draft,
dealt to KC in 2013 for Wil Myers and Jake Odorizzi  went 21-5 and was main reason for Tampa's success in 2018
Closer - Rafael Soriano, 30, picked up from the Braves for little    LHP - Ryan Yarbrough, 28, trade from Seattle 2017,
will leave for Yankees as a free agent in 2011  went 16-6, 2nd biggest reason for Tampa's success
Closer - Joaquin Benoit, 33, signed as cheap FA in 2010    Closer - Sergio Romo, 35, trade from LA 2017 trade deadline
will leave for Detroit as a free agent in 2011    C - Wilson Ramos, 30, obtained from Phillies at 2018 trade deadline
Reliever - Jake McGee, 23, 5th round pick in 2004 draft    2B - Joey Wendle, 28, trade with A's 2018 - came out of nowhere to hit .300
SS - Willy Adames, 22, deal from Detroit at trade deadline 2014
2010 - The loaded Rays finish first again, but lose to Texas in the LDS.    OF - Tommy Pham, 30, deal from St. Louis at 2018 trade deadline
OF - Mailex Smith, 25, trade from Seattle 2017
2011 - Alex Cobb, 23, is a rookie. He was a 4th round pick in the '06 draft.     DH - CJ Cron, 30, trade from Anaheim 2018
Arm problems will cut his careeer short in 2016
2019 - The Rays improve another six games in the standings behind even
2011 - Matt Moore, 22, debuts. He was an 8th round pick in the '07 draft.  better pitching than in '81. They give 126 runs less than the league average.
Arm problems will curtail his career after a brilliant 2013 season.  Their offense remains at about the league average. The improvement
comes thru a rare high quality free agent signing by the Rays in RHP
2012 - RHP - Chris Archer, 23, debuts.  Charlie Morton, 35, from the Astros. Morton immediately becomes the ace of
He was picked up from the Cubs in the Matt Garza deal the staff. They also get a big year out of unexpected closer Emilio Pagan, 28,
who they had picked up from the A's in a minor deal during the offseason.
2013 - SS Tim Beckham, 23, debuts. Tampa actually gave up ten more runs in '19 than '18, but the league average
The first overall pick in the 2008 draft is a bust runs jumped a whopping sixty runs from '18 to '19.

2013 - OF Wil Myers, 22, is a rookie. He and RHP Jake Odorizzi  had  2019 - The return of the Rays to contention after a four year hiatus warms
been picked up in a deal for RHPs Wade Davis and James Shields in  the hearts of all baseball fans. They're the ultimate underdog, but they
a salary dump. He will be traded to San Diego in 2015 manage to persevere. Tremendous credit goes to GM Erik Neander, but you
also have to give profs to the organization which turns out one exceptional
2013 - Closer Alex Colome, 24, debuts. He was an IFA in 2007 exec after another. Tampa is able to ferret out top talent on the cheap and
makes brilliant use of their scarce resources. No one would have blamed
2014 - OF Kevin Kiermaier, 24, is a rookie.  them if they had just rolled over and died with two heavyweight spenders
He was a 31st round pick in the 2010 draft in the Division like the Yankees and Red Sox. Instead, they have thrived.
