  1970 - Nineteen year old rookie righthander Bert Blyleven joins the    
  club. A curveball specialist, he will win 287 games as one of the  Notable Events:  
    top pitchers of the era.     
    1976 - Shortstop Roy Smalley, 23, is obtained from Texas for Bert  
  1971 - The winning run comes to a crashing halt as the Twins drop twenty  Blyleven  
  games in the standings. They are mediocre for the rest of the decade    
  Calvin Griffith accomplished his move to Minnesota, built an outstanding 1976 - Switch hitting catcher Butch Wynegar, 20, is a rookie  
  team to ensure the move's success, and has now lost interest in     
  putting in the effort required for sustaining that excellence.  1976 - Tony Oliva retires after the season. Knee injuries finally got the  
    best of him.  
  1972 - Dave Goltz, a twenty three year old righthander, is a rookie.    
    1977 - Rod Carew bats .388 and wins the MVP  
  1973 - Slugging outfielder Larry Hisle, 26, is obtained from the Cards.    
  He had done nothing in his career until the Twins got him. 1978 - Rod Carew is traded to the Angels after the season  
       
  1974 - Harmon Killebrew is released at the end of the season. He plays    
  one more season for the Royals.
